Say hello to uh, me?

Josué Munro

I've always had a passion for design and a curiosity for technology. After completing my Bachelor's Degree in computer science I was left wondering how to pursue my interests.

I have practical programming skills so the natural step would be to get a job as a junior developer at a tech firm. But even during my degree I was frustrated with the lack of creativity in general programming. Being stuck at a software company was not going to work.

So here I am, bringing my skills and fiery spirit to you! The prospect of working alongside other ambitious and driven people to help them build their dream is what gets me out of bed. I cannot wait to meet you, hear your story and help you take your next step in the online world.

Overview

André from Carlyle Studios wanted a professional website that showcased his music production and live show services. We built it from the ground up to stay true to their brand and display their previous work in an engaging way. We designed it from the perspective of an artist looking for a new studio. What do they have on offer? What have other artists said? What does the music they've made sound like? Will I fit well with this studio? Can I trust them? Lots of negative space, strong brand colours and awesome photography by JTL Media help tell this story and show Carlyle Studios at its best.

Biggest Challenge

We wanted a sleek way to showcase the songs André had produced. After looking all over for a solution it became apparent that no one or very few people had created something like this. It was time to get dirty and custom code a solution. Through some thorough research we found that Spotify provides a URL to a 30 second preview of every song on the platform. We were able to link the preview URLs to our custom audio player and we were in business!

Conclusion

It was a pleasure working with André and I think we built an awesome website that we can both be proud of (I mean it is on this portfolio after all). Make sure to go check it out via the big button below and give Carlyle Studios some love, maybe even get in contact with him if you happen to be an aspiring artist based in New Zealand?!

Overview

Bruce and Annemarie had an existing website but it wasn't clear what their business actually did and the layout made the whole experience even more confusing. We decided that they needed a redesign that effectively explained what Living Legacy offered and showed the value of their video biography service. As Living Legacy is in such a new market, we needed to start from the beginning of the story. What is a video biography? Who are they for? Why would you want one? We anticipated the most common questions a new visitor would have and quickly answered them, ideally before they decided to leave the site. What we built is a website that gets straight to the point, helping Living Legacy build awareness around their new venture.

Biggest Challenge

We took on this project knowing that Living Legacy had a short deadline before their upcoming marketing campaign. After the research phase and design phase we only had 2 days to develop the site. Fortunately, Webflow is a great tool. A couple of late nights and a few energy drinks later, the site was ready to go live! It's not something we want to make a habit of, but it was a good test of our skills and speed.

Conclusion

It was great working with both Bruce and Annemarie. They were very receptive to our feedback and were hands-on with the project from start to finish. It was a push but we made it! If you think having a professional video recording of your parent's or grandparent's life story would be valuable to you and your family, go checkout Living Legacy's website. They make amazing videos and are experts at guiding people through telling their story. Go on! Have a look :)

Overview

How did this project come to be and what were the objectives Josue? Yo hello kind reader thanks for asking! This project started out a bit differently than others. I was first contacted by Henry, a mate I went to high school with. He was starting a business that helped link Chinese international students with good schools in New Zealand, in this case a flight school. Mainland Air was interested in using his service as a large portion of Mainland's revenue comes from international students. Henry knew he would have much better chances of attracting students to Mainland Air if their website was up to date and properly represented them. This is where your good mates Webdune come in!

The objectives were straightforward:
1. Update the website so that prospective international students would be convinced to enrol at Mainland Aviation College
2. Clean up the overall flow of information and make it easy for visitors to find what they're looking for, therefore increasing charter bookings and domestic enrolments
3. General aesthetic overhaul to show Mainland Air as a modern business and engage site visitors

With our objectives laid out and everyone on the same page it was time to get into it!

Biggest Challenge

As a flight training and charter airline company operating in the deep south of New Zealand, one of the biggest selling points is the amazing views that students and passengers get to enjoy when flying with Mainland Air. Of course we wanted to highlight this across the redesigned website, but that means a lot of high quality images. Unfortunately, Mainland Air didn't have many on hand and a professional photographer wasn't in the budget. We would have to rely on our extreme resourcefulness to pull it off. A combination of our good mates at Unsplash and the discovery of Reuben Morrison's photos helped fill most of the gaps in our need for gorgeous images. The rest of the images were sourced through a myriad of different strategies, little secrets we'll keep to ourselves 😳 In the end we think the photos we used look amazing and we learnt some important lessons about content to take onto the next project!

Conclusion

All in all, designing and building the new Mainland Air website was a very satisfying experience. Together with the team at Mainland Air we've built a website that starkly contrasts the previous site in all the right ways. An easy to navigate, engaging and good-looking website that will have enrolments and bookings flying through the door. If you're a budding pilot or you're looking for the flight experience of a lifetime (or both!?) be sure to check out the website and head down to Mainland Air at the Dunedin International Airport.
